What's Your Story?
All of us have a story. It strings together the events in our lives so someone else can understand what we’ve been through. Our story is our version of what has happened, what we don’t normally do is write the story looking forward with the thought of creating it, as opposed to being a victim of circumstances. There will be times when we have zero control over what happens, however there will be other time where we do have the ability to control our lives. I have been fortunate to be around some very successful individuals, all of which were planners. They plan for their success instead of leaving it up to chance. This doesn’t mean things always work out the way they want them to, it means they go in with a vision increasing their chance of success.
I was having a conversation with one of my clients about eating habits, daily affirmation, and how it affected them and their outcome. The conversation turned to writing a new story where they win. Their current story was filled with all the reasons that they would fail, because of thing that had happened in the past. This was one of those cases where I got to hear and see myself in someone else’s actions.
I have a story as well. Mine is of all the things that have gone wrong and how I often wait for the other shoe to drop, as this was my perception of what would happen. That was until a couple of years ago when I got a coach and he encouraged me to change my story. He pushed for the narrative where my past could dictate the outcome of my future. The big thing he insisted on was that I had the power to write my new story. I found this very frustrating since I had always been a victim of my story instead of the narrator. I found this very uncomfortable, yet powerful. It was interesting what things started to happen when I was working on my outcome instead of waiting for the other shoe to fall.
When I listen to people talk about losing weight, they often say “I’ve tried everything”, which we know from the start is not true. More than likely they have tried the same two or three styles of doing things over and over again leading to repeated failure. Now it’s time to write a new story with a new, victorious ending. The biggest thing about writing your success story is knowing what the ending is. This will allow you to overcome the obstacle that will invariably come up along the way. Your brain will find a way to take you to your ending as long as your resolve is true. The obstacles, hard work, and pain will all be there as well as the joy of victory. Write all of these compelling factors into your story to keep you motivated along the way. Remember a strong why will lift you past many of the obstacles that you will encounter along the way.
Is it time to be the hero in your story, where you reach your ultimate destiny? Remember that you are in control of your destiny and not a victim of a story gone wrong. If you need help writing your new story just let me know. That’s what I’m here for. One of the biggest reasons I write theses blogs is to let people know that fitness people are just like everyone else, we all have something that we have had to overcome.
