How to set S.M.A.R.T goals

Is the way you are setting goals setting you up for failure? It may not be intentional, but how we set our goals will directly translate into how successful we are at achieving them!

Take a moment to list out your top 3 fitness goals in your head or on paper. Now let’s take a look at them. We’re not mind readers - so we’ve listed some common ones below as an example.

  1. I want to lose weight

  2. I want to get stronger

  3. I want to run a 5k

These are all a great start! But… is your goal S.M.A.R.T? Setting S.M.A.R.T (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time bound) goals is key to take your goals from thoughts to reality.

Here are some questions to ask yourself as you set your goals to help you get where you want to be:

Is my goal Specific?

Take a look at the top goal on your list. Now get specific. If your goal is to lose weight- how much would you like to lose? What steps are you willing to take to achieve it? The more specific your goal, the easier it will be to take action!

Is my goal Measurable?

You’re off to a great start getting specific. Now it’s time to think about benchmarks that will allow you to measure your progress. I want to lose X pounds per week. I will track my progress through weekly weigh ins and check-ins with my trainer.

Is my goal Achievable?

If you want to run a marathon and you haven’t run a consecutive mile in years, its okay to pick a more realistic starting place. If you decide to work out 5x per week, and you have been a coach potato recently, it may be more realistic to start with 1x/wk and go from there. That doesn’t mean you will never run a marathon or work out 5x/wk, but it WILL prevent you from burnout, feeling overwhelmed, or not even knowing where to start. Think about your goal and any limitations that may keep you from getting there, be realistic, and most importantly kind to yourself as you embark on this new journey.

Is my goal Relevant?

As you get even more serious about your goal - think about WHY you want to achieve it. What is the benefit to your chosen goal? Maybe you want to lose weight so you look great at your next school reunion or you want to get stronger so you can pick up your grandchild. Having a reason your goal MATTERS to you will add fuel to the goal achieving fire.

Is my goal Time-Bound?

Do you have a deadline for your goal? If you want to run that 5k - when is it? Setting a realistic time-frame to achieve your goal will help keep you on track.

Now let’s give it a try!

Original goal: I want to lose weight.

S.M.A.R.T. goal: I want to lose 20 pounds in a 4 month span in time for my high school reunion in September. I plan to workout three times per week and have regular weigh ins and nutrition meetings with my trainer to measure my progress. This means I plan to lose 5 pounds per month which feels achievable to me.
