The Benefits of Foam Rolling

Whether it’s the start of your workout, or you’re feeling sore, foam rolling can be highly beneficial. It can also be that good hurt if ya know what we mean. If you haven’t given foam rolling a try, we’re here to give you the information you need to get started!

One of our favorite tools in the gym is the trusty foam roller! Foam rolling helps relieve tension in muscles, improve overall flexibility and range of motion. Foam rollers allow you to give yourself a self-massage to your soft connective tissue by applying pressure with gentle strokes to the target area. We love a good massage, but it’s undoubtedly cheaper and you can do it from home!

Pre-Workout Benefits

Most of us have gone to the gym and found ourselves jogging on a treadmill or an elliptical for 15-20 minutes to warm up our muscles. Although a jog will increase your circulation, it is not the most effective way to warm-up.

We recommend foam rolling pre-workout instead. This involves applying slow pressure to target areas, such as the thighs or upper back, for about 30 seconds to increase blood flow and warm up the area. Spending 2-5 minutes foam rolling is a great way to prep your muscles and avoid injury.

Post-Workout Benefits

Foam rolling can also be beneficial post workout to reduce muscle soreness. Incorporating foam rolling and light stretching after a workout will speed your recovery and help you see better results from your workout.

Everyday Use

Foam rolling is not only a great way to warm-up for your workout or recover afterwards, but it can also be used for those aches and pains you have in your daily life. Are you tense from stress? Sit all day and have the world’s most tight hips? Golfer’s/tennis elbow? Foam roller to the rescue!

Notice where you are feeling tension - neck/shoulders, wrists, butt, hips/quads and try targeted foam rolling in those areas to find a sense of release. Not only is it effective, but you a small time commitment can yield big benefits. Try spending just 5 minutes a day foam rolling to relieve tension, soreness, and stress.
