Jumping rope is an excellent motor skill-building activity. Since kids have to pick up both their feet simultaneously, jumping rope builds motor coordination. For beginners, it also takes a lot of concentration, which helps kids hone their ability to focus. Plus, it’s fun! I mean, who doesn’t like to make up new rhymes and challenge themselves to jump straight through the alphabet?

But jumping rope is not just for little kids.

Boxers do it. And you should, too, because jumping rope is a full-body workout. Not only does it tone your calves, it helps tighten and tone your rear delts, abdominals, quads, hamstrings, shoulders, biceps, and triceps! In fact, the simple act of jumping rope can do more for you overall than the same time spent jogging, including calorie burn.

Compared to jogging for 30 minutes, jumping rope burns more calories. According to Science Daily, “This aerobic exercise can achieve a “burn rate” of up to 1300 calories per hour of vigorous activity, with about 0.1 calories consumed per jump. Ten minutes of jumping rope can roughly be considered the equivalent of running an eight-minute mile.” Simply, for an average-sized person, jumping rope can burn approximately 200 to 300 calories in only 15 minutes.

In addition, this schoolyard staple will improve coordination, heart health, and believe it or not, bone density (likely due to dynamic loading—the high impact of jumping).
